David Barron, IP partner at Gowling WLG, passed away on Nov. 17 due to an illness that “he bore with characteristic bravery.”

Back in 1996, he first served as an IP partner for Wragge & Co, which merged with Lawrence Graham to form Wragge Lawrence Graham & Co, which then merged with Gowlings to form Gowling WLG as it is known today.

Armed with over two decades of experience in intellectual property, with a focus on tech patent litigation, he helped establish the firm’s international IP team from the ground up. He has been dubbed a “patent star” owing to his extensive experience in the field.

According to his LinkedIn page, he also supervised litigation and general IP strategy in European jurisdictions on behalf of U.S. companies.

“David was rightly proud of his exceptional success rate in litigation and arbitration,” said a Gowling WLG news release, which noted that he had handled a number of leading cases in relation to standard essential patents.

“David's contribution as a partner was exceptional,” added the announcement. “We will remember him for his kindness, warmth and humour as well as his support of others, his professionalism and his leadership. He is deeply missed by his many colleagues and friends in the IP team.”
