Welcome to this week’s roundup of movements among major law firms, in which we sum up significant hires, promotions and departures.
Bennett Jones LLP
Valerie Hughes has joined the standing pool of arbitrators for the World Trade Organization Multi-Party Interim Appeal Arbitration Arrangement.
Hughes is an Ottawa-based senior counsel in the international trade and investment practice of Bennett Jones. Her practice includes international treaty law and international trade law. She has participated in over 70 WTO disputes.
“The world needs a stable, multilateral rules-based system for global trade,” said Hughes. “It is needed to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and to respond to the growing protectionism we have witnessed in recent years.”
Dentons
Dentons has appointed Seon Kang as lead of the corporate and commercial law group in the Montreal office. Kang is a Montreal-based partner whose practice centres on project financings and private placements, mergers and acquisitions and commercial and strategic agreements.
Claude Morency, managing partner of the firm’s Montreal office praised Kang’s “rigour, work ethic, commitment and determination.”
Kang’s predecessor, Mathilde Carrière, served for over three years in the role.
DLA Piper (Canada) LLP
Colin Brousson has joined as partner in the firm’s national restructuring group. Based in Vancouver, Brousson’s practice areas include restructuring, insolvency and Indigenous law with an emphasis on economic development.
“Colin has been counsel in numerous high-profile restructuring and insolvency matters and is widely respected for his depth of experience and industry knowledge,” said Robert Seidel, Q.C., the firm’s Canada managing partner.
Gowling WLG
Gowling WLG has appointed Brian Lee as co-head of its Canadian China practice, joining current head Thomas J. Timmins.
Lee is a Vancouver-based partner who also co-manages the firm’s Beijing office. He exclusively practises intellectual property law, with a focus on patent matters. He is a registered patent agent in both Canada and the U.S.
Harris, Sheaffer LLP
The Toronto-based firm has announced that Odysseas Papadimitriou has been promoted to partner. Papadimitriou’s practice centers on condominium development.
