Welcome to this week’s roundup of movements among major law firms, in which we sum up significant hires, promotions, departures and other announcements.
Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP
The firm appointed Kristin Taylor, who focuses on employment and labour law, as managing partner and Mark Bennett, who practises corporate and securities law, as executive chairperson. Both Taylor and Bennett are based in the Toronto office.
DLA Piper (Canada) LLP
The firm announced the following appointments:
- Trevor Wong-Chor as global co-chairperson of the energy and natural resources group (Calgary) — securities, business law, mergers and acquisitions
- Daniel Kenney as co-chairperson of the Canadian capital markets group (Calgary) — securities, corporate law, mining law
- Derek Sigel as co-chairperson of the Canadian capital markets group (Toronto) — mergers and acquisitions, corporate/commercial law, securities

“Daniel and Derek are both nationally recognized practitioners with considerable experience handling sophisticated corporate finance transactions across a broad range of key growth sectors,” said Seidel about Kenney and Sigel.
Founders LLP
Chris Payne, who focuses on banking and finance law, and Money Khoromi, who works in mergers and acquisitions and securities, left Goodmans LLP to establish Founders LLP, a corporate transactional boutique based in Toronto. George Waggott, a labour and employment lawyer formerly of McMillan LLP, also joined the firm.
Langlois lawyers, LLP
Cynthia Chassigneux joined the firm’s Montreal office as a partner and lawyer practising privacy law, with an emphasis on biometrics, artificial intelligence, privacy incidents, governance, health research, cross-border data flows and video surveillance.
McCarthy Tétrault LLP
Jeff Oldewening joined the firm’s Toronto office as a partner in the national tax group. Oldewening is experienced in innovative tax planning structures.
McMillan LLP
Shari Munk-Manel, whose practice centres on employment and labour relations, was appointed as Montreal office management partner, while Éric Vallières, who has nearly two decades of experience as a litigator focusing on competition and aviation law, will serve as senior partner, Quebec affairs.
Norton Rose Fulbright Canada LLP
Jeff Landmann, based in Calgary, is a new partner handling corporate and commercial disputes and employment law-related matters.
Roger Smith, Calgary managing partner, said in the news release that Landmann’s “extensive experience will help our clients manage risk and overcome significant employment obstacles on their paths to success, while strengthening our position in the legal services market in Canada and abroad.”
Rogerson Law Group
James Bennett, who is an experienced trial lawyer in family separation cases, was appointed as head of the firm’s family law practice.
“Mr. Bennett brings tremendous leadership to this practice and a wealth of practical expertise in family law,” said Andrew Rogerson, the firm's founder.
Shibley Righton LLP
The Ontario-based firm welcomed two partners, Joel Berkovitz, who works in condominium law and business law, and Jonathan Miller, a litigator in the areas of professional liability, commercial litigation and construction law.
Torkin Manes LLP
Doug Bourassa joined the Toronto-based firm as a partner in the litigation group.
