Stéphanie Destrempes, partner and lawyer at the Montreal office of Lavery de Billy, L.L.P., has been appointed to the board of directors and executive committee of the Conseil québécois de la franchise.

In the post announcing the appointment, Lavery de Billy, L.L.P. also said that Destrempes has been named head of the firm’s franchising and distribution group.

“Stéphanie’s appointment leaves no doubt as to the depth of her expertise in serving franchisors, distributors, retailers and manufacturers,” said Lavery’s post.

Destrempes, who also practises in the areas of commercial law and restructuring and insolvency law, has acted for franchisors and distributors from numerous industries, such as food service, retail, service and health and wellness, and for private and institutional lenders, trustees and receivers in Quebec.

Her experience has covered matters relating to the implementation of business models, the development of operational structures, the management and restructuring of franchise networks, the setting up new foreign networks in Quebec, the expansion of networks beyond the province, trademark protection, mergers and acquisitions and the development of commercial agreements on matters relating to franchising, licensing, affiliation, management, service, distribution, supply, commercial leases, asset and share purchase agreements and security agreements.

Destrempes has also handled matters applying the Farm Debt Mediation Act and the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act and matters involving the enforcement of commercial, agricultural or private security interests. She has given lectures upon being invited by numerous industry stakeholders and has authored and collaborated on many published articles.

At the Conseil québécois de la franchise, Destrempes has been a part of the Gala Maillon d’or Committee and Nomination Subcommittee, as well as the Organizing Committee of the Golf Tournament. She has also served as founder and member of the Femmes en toute Franchise Committee of the Conseil québécois de la franchise and as director (treasurer) of the Maison de la famille des Maskoutains.

Destrempes has also been a member of the Association of Québec Women in Finance, of the Research and Legislation Committee of the Young Bar of Montreal, of the Association of Quebec Women in Finance’s Professional Development and Advancement Committee and of the Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life’s Organizing Committee in the Saint-Hyacinthe region.

Fluent in English and French, Destrempes received her LLB from the Université de Montréal in 2006 and her admission to the Quebec bar in 2008.
