Three new judges join B.C. Provincial Court: Scott Mulder, Nina Purewal and Michael Munro

British Columbia’s Ministry of Attorney General has announced the appointments of Scott Mulder, Nina Purewal and Michael Munro to the Provincial Court of British Columbia, effective Jan. 31.

The AG assigned Judge Mulder to the Northern region with chambers in Quesnel.

Mulder articled and practised in Terrace and has extensive family and criminal law expertise. He appeared on several complex family law and criminal matters throughout northern B.C. and represented the Nisga’a Lisims government in child protection trials.

He obtained his law degree from the University of Victoria in 1997.

Judge Purewal was assigned to the Northern region with chambers in Prince George and facilitated the ongoing Northern Bail Pilot Project.

Purewal previously served as an administrative Crown counsel in the Smithers Crown Counsel office. She worked with various government and non-governmental organizations, such as Pivot Legal LLP, to further human rights for marginalized individuals.

She earned her law degree from the University of Victoria in 2005. She also holds a master’s degree in international human rights, which she obtained from Oxford University in 2013.

The AG assigned Judge Munro to the Vancouver Island region with chambers in Victoria. His appointment should support the implementation of virtual bail court hearings in the southern area of Vancouver Island.

Munro was a sole practitioner and taught an advocacy course at the University of Victoria Faculty of Law.

He obtained his law degree from the University of Victoria and was called to the bar in 1991.
