Eight law firms made new announcements
Welcome to this week’s roundup of movements among major law firms, in which we sum up significant hires, promotions, departures and other announcements.
Aird & Berlis LLP
The firm welcomed Renee Van as an associate in the tax group.
Van advises private and public corporations and high net worth individuals and families on all areas of tax planning. She is a member of the Canadian Tax Foundation.
Fillmore Riley LLP
Darrell Kreel joined the firm as an associate counsel.
Kreel specializes in all aspects of family law matters, including separation, divorce, parenting time, division of assets, and child and spousal support. He also has experience drafting separation, cohabitation, and pre-nuptial agreements and assisting domestic clients with disputes involving protective relief claims and child protection and guardianship.
He also handles estate litigation matters related to validity of wills, removal of executors and trustees, interpretation or variation of trusts, and passing of accounts.
Gowling WLG
The firm announced the appointment of Jessica Boily to the board of directors of the Ontario Waste Management Association. OWMA is the province’s largest environmental services association that represents nearly 300 members within the waste management and recycling sector.
Boily is a partner in the firm’s Toronto office. She advises clients on matters related to contaminated sites, director and officer liability, environmental approvals and permits, chemical substances, export and import of environmentally regulated materials, and transportation of dangerous goods.
She also defends companies and individuals in environmental assessment and approval hearings and federal, provincial, and municipal enforcement matters.
Lerners LLP
The firm welcomed three new associates:
- Andrea Levstik and Maya Kotob − health law and commercial litigation groups
- Megan Dawson − health law and plaintiff personal injury groups
Levstik has experience conducting external and workplace investigations involving universities, municipalities, and other large public and private institutions. Moreover, she handles regulatory matters and defends medical negligence claims.
Meanwhile, Kotob’s practice focuses on medical negligence, professional regulation, and commercial disputes. She has acted for clients before the Consent and Capacity Board, the Ontario Review Board, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, and the Ontario Court of Appeal.
Dawson assists clients with personal injury matters, criminal and provincial offences, and institutional legal issues. She has appeared before the Parole Board of Canada and the Social Benefits Tribunal.
McKenzie Lake Lawyers LLP
The firm welcomed four new partners in the Guelph office:
- Kyle Hampson
Hampson regularly advises clients on acquisition and sale of properties, institutional and private financing deals, lease agreements, and other real estate transactions, such as lot line adjustments, easements, and property conversions. He also acts for clients in various corporate matters, including M&A, corporate reorganizations, and financings.
- Michael Henley
Henley specializes in private M&A, corporate restructuring, succession planning, and bank financing work. In addition, he advises on commercial real estate transactions and assists clients in a range of corporate matters, including incorporations, shareholder agreements, and purchase and sale agreements.
- Thomas Manes
Manes has extensive expertise in a wide array of business law matters, such as leasing, M&A, and drafting and negotiating business agreements. He also acts for lenders and borrowers in secured transactions.
- Michael McCluskey
McCluskey has experience dealing with contractual disputes, commercial and residential real estate-related lawsuits, construction claims, and liens. He helps clients resolve all types of litigation disputes from the early stages of an issue all the way through to trial.
McMillan LLP
Danica Jorgenson and Savannah Nielsen are now associates in the firm’s Calgary office.
Jorgenson practises in the areas of business law and financial services. Meanwhile, Nielsen specializes in M&A, capital markets, and securities.
MLT Aikins LLP
Milt Christiansen retired from the firm after 40 years of service.
Christiansen is a former partner, specializing in all aspects of labour and employment law. He has represented clients across numerous sectors, such as aviation, broadcasting, construction, food processing, health care, hospitality, manufacturing, mining, printing, publishing, retail, transportation, and utilities.
He was previously inducted as a fellow of the College of Labor & Employment Lawyers. Based in Maryland, CLEL is a distinguished body of individuals drawing its membership from leading lawyers, academicians, and scholars in the field of labour and employment law.
Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP
Kim Maguire is now a partner in the firm’s tax group in the Vancouver office.
Maguire advises public and private corporations on tax matters involved in M&A and financing transactions. She also has extensive expertise in private equity, international tax, and taxation of cryptocurrency.
She is active in the Canadian international tax community and frequently presents at tax conferences and events. She currently serves on the executive board of the International Fiscal Association Canada.
