Roundup of law firm hires, promotions, departures: Aug. 15, 2022 update

Welcome to this week’s roundup of movements among major law firms, in which we sum up significant hires, promotions, departures and other announcements.

Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP

The firm announced that Jonathan Kahn was elected chair of the Section of Environment, Energy and Resources (SEER) at the American Bar Association. SEER serves as the premier forum for lawyers working in environmental, natural resources, and energy-related areas.

Kahn is a partner and chair of the firm’s national environmental group. He advises on environmental and natural resources law matters, such as purchase, sale and remediation of contaminated land, management of natural resources, transportation, handling and disposal of hazardous substances, environmental permitting, and air, water and waste regulation.

His clients span various industries, including chemical, mining, construction, oil and gas, transportation, general manufacturing, automotive, food and beverage, and agribusiness.

Clark Wilson LLP

Dan Melnick joined the firm as an infrastructure, construction and procurement associate.

Melnick handles many construction matters, including builders’ lien, defect and negligence claims, and delay disputes. He also has extensive expertise in dispute resolution processes.

DLA Piper (Canada) LLP

The firm welcomed Bill deJong as an associate in the Calgary office’s ‎‎securities and capital markets group.‎

deJong specializes in securities, M&A, corporate finance, initial public offerings, bought deals, prospectus offerings, reverse take-overs, private placements, takeover bids, plans of arrangement, and corporate reorganizations. He previously worked as in-house counsel and corporate development professional for Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) and TSX Venture Exchange-listed companies.

Fillmore Riley LLP

Sven Hombach rejoined the firm as an associate after serving as a legislative drafter for the Manitoba government for six years.

Hombach focuses his practice on administrative law, regulatory law, and dispute resolution. He has represented clients in rate regulation, capital expansion projects, and energy efficiency investments matters before the Manitoba Public Utilities Board.

In addition, he has appeared in proceedings involving product liability, clean-up of contaminated sites, and construction liens before Manitoba and Ontario courts.

Goldblatt Partners LLP

The firm announced the departure of labour lawyers Sarah Rostom and Darryl Korrell.

Rostom will join London-based human rights lawyer Mihad Fahmy to focus her practice on workplace investigations. Meanwhile, Korrell is moving to Calgary to establish his law practice.

Goodmans LLP

The firm welcomed Michael Hassar as an associate in the tax group.

McMillan LLP

William Burke is now an associate in the firm’s Toronto office.

Burke’s practice focuses on capital markets and securities. Before his new role, he articled with the firm for almost one year.

Minden Gross LLP

Stephanie Furlan joined the firm as an associate in the commercial real estate group.

Furlan assists clients with the purchase, sale, and financing of mixed-use, commercial, and industrial properties. She also has experience drafting and negotiating municipal agreements, social housing agreements, and service contracts.

Ogletree Deakins

The firm welcomed Jordan Simons as an associate in the Toronto office.

Simons’ practice includes advising employers and managers on human rights complaints, privacy and information security matters, and defending organizations in privacy-related disputes.

Stewart McKelvey

The firm announced James LeMesurier’s election as chair of the Harbour Station Commission. The commission establishes policies and guidelines for the management and operation of the TD Station facility in Saint John, New Brunswick.

LeMesurier is a partner in the firm’s Saint John office. He deals with several aspects of employment and labour relations law. He has represented employers in construction labour relations, police labour relations and discipline, and workplace health and safety law matters.
