Barreau du Québec launches legal aid clinic in Montreal

The Barreau du Québec recently launched its legal aid clinic as part of its ongoing efforts to promote access to justice in the province.

The clinic will provide access to free legal services – including legal information and advice and assistance in drafting legal documents and preparing for hearings − in social administrative law, civil law, family law, estates, and housing law. Students of École du Barreau will offer these services under the close supervision of lawyers.

According to Bâtonnière of Quebec Catherine Claveau, the initial idea of this initiative is linked to the modernization of the professional training program of École du Barreau.

“We have long been concerned about the problems of access to justice for all citizens,” Claveau said. “On the other hand, we sought to equip our future lawyers with a human and committed experience, so that they arrive better equipped on the labour market and, above all, more informed about the needs of citizens in terms of justice.”

“The clinic therefore meets this dual objective: to contribute concretely to improving access to justice and to propel future lawyers into a practice that is in tune with society’s needs,” Claveau added.

The clinic will officially open its doors to the public on October 18 at Maison du Barreau in Montreal. The law society confirmed that it will open three more clinics in Quebec City, Gatineau, and Sherbrooke by August 2023.

Those interested in arranging an appointment with the clinic may log on to this website starting September 15.
