Six firms made new announcements
Welcome to this week’s roundup of movements among major law firms, in which we sum up significant hires, promotions, departures, and other announcements.
Alexander Holburn Beaudin + Lang LLP
The firm has promoted three lawyers to the partnership, effective January 1:
- Ephraim Fung – real estate
- Aubrie Girou – wills, estates and trusts
- Menka Sull - insurance
DLA Piper
DLA Piper has named Correna Jones and Michael Richards co-chairs of the firm's Canadian employment group. They are both experienced employment law professionals who advise national and international organizations on various employment law matters.
Jones is active in the legal profession and serves as one of three Canadian representatives on the firm's America committee. She is a member of the labour and employment law subsection and immigration law subsection of the Canadian Bar Association. She has also taught a labour law course at the University of Calgary's Faculty of Law since 2020.
Richards has over 20 years of experience in employment law and has represented clients in various levels of courts, administrative tribunals, arbitrations, mediation, and negotiations. He also served as DLA Piper's managing partner of the Toronto office from 2016 to 2021. He has played a significant role in the office's growth while maintaining his legal practice.
Miller Thomson LLP
The firm has announced that four boutique lawyers from Affinity Law Group have joined Miller Thomson. Partner Darcy Wray, counsel Ari Shack, and associates Power Chen and Jesse Wray have joined the firm's corporate and M&A group in Vancouver.
"The experience and client relationships that Darcy Wray and his team bring are important for the continued expansion of both our Business Law Group and the firm's presence on the West Coast," Miller Thomson chair Peter Auvinen said.
Russell Alexander Collaborative Family Lawyers
Jessica Lipton has joined the firm as an associate lawyer. Lipton is an experienced family lawyer. Her practice encompasses litigation and alternative dispute resolution such as mediation and collaborative practice.
Smart & Biggar LLP
Smart & Biggar LLP has welcomed Tim Webb as a new principal of the firm's Canadian patent team based in Calgary, Alberta. Webb is a lawyer, engineer and patent agent with over two decades of experience advising clients on creating, protecting and managing IP rights and helping them secure IP assets that create strategic commercial opportunities.
Thompson Dorfman Sweatman LLP
TDS has welcomed Matthew Bolt as an associate at the firm's Morden and Winkler offices. Bolt's practice primarily focuses on corporate and commercial law. He graduated from the University of Manitoba Robson Hall Faculty of Law in 2016 and was called to the bar in 2017.
The firm has also announced that Reid Buchanan has left TDS. He has joined People Corporation as an in-house legal counsel, effective March 6.
