Here are Canada's top pro bono firms and the best practices of 2023

Presenting this year’s 5-Star Pro Bono Firms

Canadian Lawyer has announced the winners of the inaugural 5-Star Pro Bono Firms. The list recognizes the awardees' contributions to providing invaluable access to justice nationwide.

The nominations were assessed on their pro bono infrastructure and how each firm made a meaningful contribution to the industry. The criteria included pro bono committees, ability to quantify partner participation, count of pro bono time, and more.

The awardees showcased specific hallmarks, including having top executives be the face of pro bono work within their organizations, adopting formal pro bono policies, and counting pro bono time as billable in environments where the fee structure is based on the billable hours.

One of the winners is Hunter Litigation Chambers, a Vancouver-based litigation boutique opening legal access with its team of 21 lawyers. Claire Hunter, the firm’s pro bono coordinator says, “it has been my experience and our firm’s experience that it’s possible to do well and do good at the same time.”

This year’s winners displayed excellent pro bono work that deserves recognition. Click here to see the full list of 2023 5-Star Pro Bono Firms.
