Sustainable aviation fuel will allow firm to cut emissions by 80%

Linklaters hops aboard DHL's GoGreen Plus service

Global law firm Linklaters has taken another market-leading stride into a more sustainable future, as it announced on Wednesday that it would be availing of DHL’s GoGreen Plus service to meet its carbon emission targets. The service allows Linklaters to use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for its time-definite international shipments across the Asia Pacific and United Arab Emirates regions.

“Linklaters is proud to partner with DHL in this innovative and market-leading initiative,” said Linklaters partner Robert Elliot, who is also a member of the firm’s science-based targets steering group. “As a responsible business, we have a global commitment to reduce our environmental impact and associated greenhouse gas emissions. Collaborating with the right partners in our value chain makes an important contribution as we strive to meet our science-based targets by 2030.”

Logistics and express courier giant DHL launched GoGreen Plus earlier this year, which supported customers looking to cut their ‘scope 3’ emissions – those carbon emissions not directly produced by the company’s activities or assets but for which a company is indirectly responsible down the value chain – through insetting.

Carbon insetting, as opposed to offsetting, embedded nature-based solutions into a company's existing supply chain as a way of reducing carbon emissions.

GoGreen Plus customers could choose the amount of sustainable aviation fuel they wanted to use for their DHL shipments. Sustainable aviation fuel reduced the typical aviation fuel lifecycle emissions by as much as 70% to 80%. In a press release, DHL added that sustainable aviation fuel was also the only scalable solution for the years to come, as it was the only available green alternative for long-range flights.

“Sustainability is increasingly becoming an important part of the business for most of our customers,” said Ken Lee, CEO of DHL Express Asia Pacific. “Companies are now more committed than ever to reducing their environmental impact, thus it is important that we provide them with feasible solutions to do so. SAF is our key lever to improve carbon emissions, and we are proud to be the first global express courier to enable our customers to do.”

As a multinational firm with over 3,000 lawyers and 30 offices across 21 countries, Linklaters understood the importance of adapting to the changing climate through strong environmental management. In June 2021, it adopted company-wide carbon reduction targets to meet by April 2030. Linklaters’ targets included slashing scope 3 emissions by 50%.

“We wish the DHL team the very best as they raise awareness about GoGreen Plus and hope that more organizations support this initiative to build momentum behind it and collectively help to increase the pace of positive change,” Elliot said.
