Eight law firms made announcements
Welcome to this week’s roundup of movements among major law firms, in which we sum up significant hires, promotions, departures, and other announcements.
Borden Ladner Gervais LLP
The firm appointed Cindy Clarke as Toronto regional managing partner and Vincent Frenette as Montreal regional managing partner, effective July 1.
Clarke and Frenette were “a strong fit for their positions and well placed to enrich BLG’s focus on delivering exceptional client service and high-value legal advice,” given their “breadth of experience and role as trusted advisers to some of the firm’s top clients,” said John Murphy, the firm’s national managing partner and chief executive officer, in a news release.
Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP
Audrey-Julie Dallaire became a partner in the firm’s real estate law group in Montreal.
“Her expertise and extensive knowledge of major projects in the province will be valuable assets to Fasken,” said Éric Bédard, the firm’s managing partner for the Quebec region, in a news release.
Gowling WLG
The firm welcomed the following new partners:
- Heather Jones – commercial litigation (Vancouver)
- Adam Garetson – blockchain and smart contracts, fintech (Toronto)
Jones “[harnesses] extensive sector knowledge” and “approaches disputes with pragmatism, determination and deep understanding of her clients’ commercial objectives – both in the short and long term,” said Brent Kerr, managing partner of the firm’s Vancouver office, in a news release.
Garetson “has spent much of his career on the front lines of such disruptive technology and is extremely well placed to help our clients carefully weigh the risks and rewards that surround it,” said Benjamin Na, managing partner of the firm’s Toronto office, in a news release.
McCarthy Tétrault LLP
Mike Dolson joined the firm’s national tax group in Toronto.
“Clients including high net worth individuals in Canada and the U.S. must navigate inherently complex tax regimes in order to safeguard and maximize their assets,” said Raj Juneja, partner and co-head of the firm’s national tax group, in a news release.
Dolson’s “specialized expertise and unique ability to synthesize convoluted tax issues into actionable insights will be invaluable to clients,” Juneja added.
MLT Aikins LLP
John Brigidear joined the firm’s executive board. He is a Calgary-based partner who focuses on the areas of corporate/commercial law, corporate finance, securities law, and mergers and acquisitions.
“Having served as lead of our commercial team in Calgary for the past year, we look forward to the fresh perspective and hard-working approach he will now bring to our board,” said Aaron Runge, the firm’s managing partner, in a news release.
Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP
Emmanuel (Manny) Pressman, a corporate law partner in the Toronto office, became the firm’s national co-chairman, effective July 1.
“His enormous experience and profile in the cross-border and Canadian marketplaces and understanding of our clients and their businesses will serve us well in the years ahead,” said Doug Bryce, the firm’s national managing partner, in a news release.
Torkin Manes LLP
The Toronto-based firm announced the appointment of its new partner, Matthew Getzler, as co-chairman of its tax group and as a member of its wills, trusts, and estates group.
“His extensive knowledge and understanding of these intricate areas of law, coupled with his commitment to exceptional service, will not only expand our breadth of legal counsel available to our clients, but also strengthen our competitive standing in the tax, estate planning and wealth management markets,” said Jeffrey Cohen, the firm’s managing partner, in a news release.

Stephanie Kalinowski joined as a partner in the firm’s pensions and employment practice in Toronto. She advises employers, plan administrators, and service providers on all regulatory, governance, compliance, and tax matters affecting pension, retirement, and group benefit plans, said the firm’s news release.
