Western Canada Law Societies unite to develop competency profile for entry to legal practice

The Law Societies of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan have joined together in an initiative to develop the Western Canada Competency Profile (WCCP), which identifies critical competencies required upon entry to legal practice.

This joint initiative of the Western Canadian law societies is expected to help inform lawyer training and education, further enhancing lawyer competence in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. The initiative aims to ensure that the public is well-served by competent lawyers.

The Western Canada Competency Profile has been designed as a comprehensive guide that delineates the fundamental skills and knowledge necessary for individuals entering the legal field. The WCCP establishes clear standards for entry into legal practice, aiming to elevate the quality of lawyer training and education. The WCCP will enable lawyers to effectively tackle the dynamic demands of the legal profession and deliver exceptional service to the public.

A specialized WCCP task force has been appointed to lead the work. The task force comprises practitioners, educators, benchers, articling supervisors, and other key stakeholders across the four provinces. The task force will be overseen by an Advisory Committee that includes representation from each participating Law Society.

The project's scope emphasizes inclusivity, drawing upon diverse perspectives and experiences from representatives across various provinces and sectors of the legal profession. This collaborative approach ensures a well-rounded and holistic competency profile.

The Law Societies are optimistic that this collaborative effort will yield a finalized Western Canada Competency Profile by spring 2024. This profile is expected to serve as a vital tool in shaping the future of legal education and professional development, fostering a more competent and responsive legal community in the region and safeguarding the best interests of the public they serve.

The development process for this initiative has already commenced with a consultation process that is already underway.
