Minister of Justice and Attorney General Arif Virani has announced the appointment of Sally Gomery and Jonathan Dawe to the Ontario Court of Appeal and Isabelle Boillat to the Quebec Superior Court.
Ontario
Sally Gomery will sit as an Ontario Court of Appeal judge in Toronto. She earned degrees in common law and civil law from McGill University and was admitted to the Ontario bar in 1995. She was appointed to the Superior Court of Justice in 2017. Before her appointment to the bench, she was a partner with Ogilvy Renault (now Norton Rose Fulbright) in Ottawa. She was also an associate with McCarthy Tétrault in Montreal. She articled at the Supreme Court of Canada.
During her 26 years as a civil litigator, Gomery handled various disputes, encompassing insurance, medical malpractice and health sector regulation, and class action defence.
Jonathan Dawe was appointed judge of the Ontario Court of Appeal in Toronto. He got his law degree from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, where he earned a bronze medal. He clerked at the Supreme Court of Canada before receiving his LL.M. from Yale Law School in 1996. He was admitted to the Ontario bar in 1997.
Dawe was appointed to the Superior Court of Justice in 2018. He worked for over 20 years in the criminal law group at Sack Goldblatt Mitchell LLP before establishing his law firm, Dawe & Dineen. He served as associate commission counsel to the judicial inquiry in Manitoba into the wrongful conviction of James Driskell from 2006 to 2007. His legal practice focused mainly on criminal appeals.
Quebec
Isabelle Boillat was appointed as judge of the Quebec Superior Court for the district of Chicoutimi. She earned her law degree from Université Laval and was admitted to the Quebec Bar in 2000. She was appointed to the Court of Quebec in 2016. Before her appointment to the Court of Quebec, she was a partner at Simard Boivin Lemieux, where she practiced mainly in public and business law. She has been an accredited mediator in civil, commercial, and labour law.
Boillat was president of the Barreau du Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, Vice-President of the Association of Lawyers, and she sat on numerous boards, including the Commission des services juridiques, Ressources Québec, and Investissement Québec. She has received several awards and recognitions, including the title of Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel of the Régiment du Saguenay.
Minister Virani congratulated the new appointees and expressed confidence that they will do well in their new roles.
