Roundup of law firm hires, promotions, departures: November 27, 2023 update

Welcome to this week’s roundup of movements among major law firms, in which we sum up significant hires, promotions, departures, and other announcements.

Clark Wilson LLP

Clark Wilson’s estates and trusts partner and co-chair Amy Mortimore has been appointed to the Federal Judicial Advisory Committee for British Columbia, the body responsible for reviewing lawyers’ applications for appointment as a judge to the BC Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, and the Federal Court. Mortimore firmly believes in contributing to BC’s legal and professional community. She has lectured extensively to other lawyers, law students, accountants, gift planners, notaries, trust officers, and the public for many years.

Farris LLP

The firm has welcomed two articling students—Danielle Wierenga from Dalhousie University and Jack Sorokin from Allard School of Law at the University of British Columbia.

Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP

Fasken has announced several new leaders in firm-wide and regional positions. Former Ontario regional managing partner Martin Denyes has moved to the role of firm managing partner. He has served as managing partner of the firm’s Ontario region for the past 13 years, responsible for the overall operations of the Toronto and Ottawa offices. As a member of the firm’s partnership board, he has worked proactively to enhance and build relationships with its clients and in its communities. Before joining the leadership team, Denyes practised labour and employment law.

Fasken has also announced the appointment of Jenny Francis as BC managing partner, Karen Sargeant as Ontario managing partner, and Francois Brais as Quebec managing partner. Clarke Barnes will continue with his role as managing partner of Alberta. All new roles are effective starting January 1, 2024.

“The partnership board would like to congratulate all of the leaders and looks forward to collaborating across the firm as we continue to support our clients’ success across markets and ensure we are well-positioned to meet future needs,” said Katherine M. Pollock, chair of the firm’s partnership board. “We would also like to extend our gratitude to their predecessors for their invaluable leadership.”
