Top firms from Saskatchewan and Manitoba stayed in the winner’s circle since previous survey
Over 400 respondents in Canadian Lawyer’s search for the Top Prairie Law Firms for 2023–24 voted to retain the winning status of the law firms recognized in the previous report for being at the forefront of the legal profession.
This consistency shows that the winning roster of legal service providers maintained or even strengthened their competitive advantage since the last survey.
These top firms are known for their high-quality work, their unwavering pursuit of excellence, their enduring reputations, and their commitment to delivering the best results that they can for their clients. The awardees are also being lauded for their dedication to the following:
- practical client-centred service
- competitive and ethical billing practices
- professionalism and integrity
- their lawyers, who are leading in their respective fields
- the breadth and depth of their expertise and experience
The winners for 2023–24 include McKercher LLP and Robertson Stromberg LLP, both with offices in Saskatchewan.
“We get to know the client and understand who we’re working for because that’s a critical part of being able to serve their interests,” says Collin K. Hirschfeld, executive committee chairperson of McKercher LLP.
Another factor contributing to the firm’s success is “having the best and brightest in all our positions, which includes our management team, support staff, and lawyers,” Hirschfeld adds.
The Saskatoon-based firm, which has been praised for its legal skills in trial work and business law, invests in its people and technological tools so that it can stay ahead of the rapid pace of technological advancements.
“One of the most important things is staying grounded,” Hirschfeld tells Canadian Lawyer. “We aren’t complacent, and we strive to foster a culture of improvement.”
Jennifer Pereira, partner and litigator at Robertson Stromberg LLP, calls it the firm’s “unofficial motto that if you do good work, the work will come.”
She adds that this has always been the firm’s strategy and that “we will continue to be excellent at what we do, put our clients first, and solve problems efficiently.”
Amid a highly competitive market, the Saskatoon-based firm seeks to maintain its success by recruiting and retaining junior lawyers through making first-rate work available and through prioritizing staff needs.
“I think people want access to meaningful work and a good quality of life,” Pereira says to Canadian Lawyer. “We’re ensuring we listen to their needs and have those conversations with our lawyers.”
Other honourees from Saskatchewan include McDougall Gauley LLP, Miller Thomson LLP, and MLT Aikins LLP (Regina and Saskatoon). The winners from Manitoba are Fillmore Riley LLP, MLT Aikins LLP (Winnipeg), Pitblado LLP, Taylor McCaffrey LLP, and Thompson Dorfman Sweatman LLP.
