Five law firms made new announcements
Welcome to this week’s roundup of movements among major law firms, in which we sum up significant hires, promotions, departures, and other announcements.
Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP
The firm has announced that Casey Chisick has been named an inaugural member of the advisory board for York University’s new Centre for Artificial Intelligence & Society (CAIS).
Cassels has also announced that Brenda Swick has been reappointed by the Government of Canada to the Canadian roster of panellists under Chapter 10 of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), which hears disputes by Canadian producers against anti-dumping and countervailing duties imposed by the United States and Mexico against Canadian goods exported into those countries.
Conway Baxter Wilson
Conway lawyer Abdalla Barqawi has been elected as a Trustee of the County of Carleton Law Association (CCLA). He will serve a two-year term. Abdalla is the second Conway lawyer to become a CCLA trustee. Thomas Conway previously served as a trustee and became the President of the CCLA in 2006, after which he was elected as a bencher and ultimately treasurer of the Law Society of Ontario.
Dentons
The firm has welcomed Matthew Wanford as a partner in its corporate group. Based in Ottawa, Wanford is a seasoned lawyer with more than 20 years of corporate commercial law experience. He specializes in technology, including e-commerce, fintech and payments.

The has welcomed Deepak Gill to its capital markets group as a partner based in the firm’s Vancouver office. Gill’s transactional experience includes domestic and international public and private company financings, joint venture arrangements, takeover bids, statutory plans of arrangement, asset purchases and sales, and corporate reorganizations.
SmithValeriote Law Firm LLP
SV Law has welcomed Christopher C. Cooper as a lawyer in the Guelph office. Cooper’s legal practice encompasses various aspects of municipal law and land use planning and development matters. Before joining SV Law, he served as in-house counsel for several Southwestern Ontario and Greater Toronto Area municipalities. In addition, he gained experience in municipal planning and land development law at a firm located in Orangeville, Ontario.
