Five law firms made new announcements
Welcome to this week’s roundup of movements among major law firms, in which we sum up significant hires, promotions, departures, and other announcements.
Borden Ladner Gervais LLP
BLG has welcomed Marina Paperny as senior counsel. Paperny was a justice for the Courts of Appeal in Alberta and the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, the Court Martial Appeal Court of Canada and the Court of King's Bench in Alberta. She started her career as an associate at a Calgary law firm before moving to Howard Mackie (now BLG) in Calgary in 1982.
"It is going to be great to work with so many young lawyers and for me to hear new perspectives and learn from them,” said Paperny. “BLG feels like home for me, and it truly feels like a full-circle moment for me to come back to this firm. The firm has welcomed lawyer and corporate director Janis Byrne. She served as general counsel and executive vice president of legal at Pennecon Limited. Her experience encompasses various industries: construction, energy, marine, shipping, real estate, seafood processing, and auto dealerships.

Vanetia L. A. R. has joined the firm’s health law, dispute resolution and advocacy teams. She is experienced in managing an extensive caseload, including personal injury, building or structural matters, contract disputes, tax sales, fire charges, and real estate. Vanetia’s health law practice encompasses medical negligence, professional liability litigation, disciplinary proceedings, class actions, and coroner inquests.
McMillan LLP
McMillan has welcomed a new associate, Francesca D’Aquila-Kelly, to the firm’s Toronto office. D’Aquila-Kelly practises litigation and dispute resolution.
Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP
The firm has welcomed back Stéphane Eljarrat to its national litigation practice group. Eljarrat has represented corporate clients, institutions and their senior leadership in various criminal investigations and proceedings brought under competition, anti-corruption, anti-money laundering and other federal legislation. He serves as the North American regional representative of the Anti-Corruption Committee of the International Bar Association.
